Recall on blood pressure medication due to potential link to cancer

August 17, 2018 - Written by: Janeen Maxwell

The US Food and Drug Administration has recalled over 55 different medications that contain a substance that is connected to cancer. Valsartan, is the name of the medication that is prescribed to patients with blood pressure problems and heart issues.
In late July, the FDA announced that some of the Valsartan medications may have been contaminated with a material linked to cancer. The labs tests revealed that N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA), a chemical used to make liquid rocket fuel, is the carcinogen found within the drug.
Not all Valsartan medications are affected by the recall so it is important to look at the recall list. If you are taking a valsartan medication, it is important to look for the company that produced it on the prescription bottle. If you can not find the information, your pharmacy can provide you with those details.
It is also important to continue the medication rather than stopping it abruptly until you speak with your doctor, states Dr. Mary Ann Bauman, a representative for the American Heart Association.
