Many older Americans rely on their prescription medications to feel better and to stay healthy. But the cost of those drugs can sometimes be overwhelming to those on a fixed income. There are ways to reduce those costs said Dr. Alan Peterson, board member of the Partnership for Public Health.
The top five recommendations are:
- GoodRX – a site for lower cash prices on pharmaceuticals and sometimes coupons are available on the Internet https://www.goodrx.com/
- Switching to Medicare Part D
- Check if your doctor’s office lists the lowest costs for prescriptions.
- If a veteran or spouse of a veteran, make sure to check out the Veteran’s Affairs website for prescription discounts. https://www.myhealth.va.gov/mhv-portal-web/rx-refill
- Google the manufacturer of the drug prescribed. Many offer online coupons that are good at most pharmacies.
Make sure to include your zip code when searching to find the best prices in your area.
Some other suggestions:
- Check the generic drug list for Wal-Mart and other local pharmacies.
- The Patient Assistant Program offered by pharmaceutical companies – https://www.payingforseniorcare.com/longtermcare/patient-assistance-programs.html
- There are some eligibility requirements for PACE or PACE Net in Pennsylvania, but the agency does offer some assistance for prescription costs. https://www.aging.pa.gov/aging-services/prescriptions/Pages/default.aspx
