Within the nation including Lancaster County, summer is a season where there is an ongoing and increased need for regular, constant blood donation.
Due to donors traveling and going on vacation, blood inventory levels are usually reduced in the summer time. Furthermore, there is an increased need for O negative and O positive blood types due to the increased traumas within Lancaster County.
“The Blood Donor Team and the Lancaster General Hospital Blood Bank are asking, on behalf of patients of Ann B Barshinger Cancer Institute, Lancaster General Hospital and Women and Babies Hospital, that you consider making any and every effort to donate blood (if you’re able and eligible) at the Blood Donor Center (2104 building, suite 202 – second floor) or at an LGH Community Blood Drive sometime within the next 3 weeks,” states Dr. Alan S. Peterson, MD.
It is important to note that donors must bring a form of ID (donor card, license, work ID with photo), be at least 16 years of age, weigh 110+, at least 3 days before donation be free of allergy, flu, cold & nausea symptoms, stay well hydrated the day before and the day of donating, and consume a healthy meal within 4 hours before donating.
Please call 717-544-0170 if you have any questions about eligibility to donate. If you are not able to donate, share this message with your family, friends, and neighbors!
You may also ask any group or organization you are apart of if they would like to host a blood drive (whether it is this summer or in the future) and contact the donor recruiter, Katherine at kfox2@lghealth.org or 717-544-0173.
The Suburban Pavilion Donor Center hours are: Mondays 10am to 7:30 pm; Tuesdays & Thursdays 8am to 4pm; Wednesdays & Fridays 8am to 6pm. Appointments are suggested to reduce wait time, and can be made by calling 717-544-0170 or visiting lghealthevents.org
